Happy New Year!
Things have been somewhat slow recently here on the Mindbla blog, owing to the fact that I’ve spent the better part of the past several months writing my debut fiction novel, Too Much Information. But that’s about to change, since that project is all but wrapped up now and will soon be published. I’m expecting to devote more time to the blog here just as soon as I catch my breath, and I’m sure there will be lots to talk about as I venture into the exciting world of publishing for the very first time.
So thanks for stopping by, and please look forward to more content up for your enjoyment very soon – once again a very happy, safe, and productive New Year to you all!
Hi! Just a quick update here to let everyone know that I haven’t been forgetting about the Mindbla blog, I’ve been working fairly feverishly behind the scenes as it were, getting some reciprocal links going on, or trying at least, signing up for some blog directories (although according to Technorati, this is not a blog..go figure), and setting things up as far as chiclets for sharing and wordpress plugins and all that kind of good stuff I never knew existed until a few weeks ago.
However, I have also been working on some blog topics I think will be fun and interesting for everyone, including a Disney related topic with lots of neat pics (for a preview, check out the gallery at the link above), another topic which I can only consider to be an ‘only in Japan’ sort of story (it’s a good one!), and a few other odds and ends as well plus whatever happens to come up between now and then. So keep watching this space, more fun and excitement is on the way!
Thanks for stopping by.
Well, self-hosting ain’t as easy as it should be, I’ll say that much.
So far I’ve had an incident where all three of my sites crashed virtually at once. I gave up and started all over since it seemed the easiest thing to do with brand new sites, but things still seem buggy although not quite as bad as before.
Here on Mindbla and over on my UpbeatRhythms site things aren’t so bad. For some reason my email wasn’t working for any of the sites, but I opened a ticket with Hostgator (good company, so far I’ve got no complaints and they are very patient with us newbies and our stupid questions!), and they took care of that easily enough. And I’ve had some issues here or there but nothing that I wouldn’t chalk up to anything more than learning curves and growing pains. Except…
What has been absolutely disastrous, and extremely frustrating and annoying, is my picture blog which seems to constantly want to screw up the pictures.
At one point, the pictures simply vanished. As in, all of them. All the pictures. When I contacted ‘Gator the rep was like “site looks fine to me”, I’m like “no, all the pictures are missing”, and he was like, “oh, there are supposed to be pictures there?”. D’oh!
So, I fixed that with some online assistance and I tried to research up what the hell had gone wrong so it wouldn’t keep happening (again, picture blog keep in mind, if the images keep crashing what’s the point?). And then late last night as I was preparing to get some sleep and give my eye-strained peepers a much needed break, all the pics on site suddenly ballooned to enormous sizes, smashing through the margins and looking like shit.
So, I quickly switched to a different theme that made them look halfway decent, and then went to bed. In the morning it was still messed up, so I went theme shopping again and found a pretty decent looking one that seems to work well for pics. Fingers crossed.
All in all, I am realizing that as a newbie webmaster I’m bound to end up spending some hours backtracking and trying to fix stuff that is usually a non-issue on some hosted sites like Blogger. Still, it’s pretty cool to be “on my own” as it were, even if it is just a few blogs with some simple wordpress themes and some pictures and videos. Hopefully things will calm down enough for me to spend more time on offering quality content than on trying to fix the look of the spaces.
I did manage to figure out some CSS code for Mindbla here, and widened the body of the blog and a few other little tweaks. Hopefully it looks decent enough at this point, one way or the other either I’m going to have to chill out on obsessing about little theme details or else just go in the opposite direction and become a theme designer or something. Except that my sense of color sucks. So that’s out.
In the end, it all comes down to balance and finding a nice middle ground and not sweating the small stuff too much, which is why as you browse around my sites you might find minor glitches here and there. Hopefully at least all the pictures will be there, but you never know. Be assured that I’m probably well aware of whatever glitches you come across, and will get to them soon enough, little by little.
Thanks for stopping by!
What’s up with this “Mindbla” blog title, anyway?
Now that I have my very own space, bought and paid for, I figured I’d spend a few posts discussing the particulars of how I ended up with a self-hosted wordpress site, what I’m aiming for with this blog, and maybe a little about some of the ins and outs of setting up as I’ve run into my share of snags and it might be useful for others to hear about them and how I worked my way out of them.
First, a little info on the blog title. Originally I was going to name this site “NavigatingWaters” or “NavigatingtheWaters”, as in Navigating the Waters of Life and the Internet. And I almost got as far as to buy it. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought it sounded fairly haughty, not to mention potentially confusing. “Hey! Where are the links to onboard speedboat navigation? What’s the deal?”
I was giving the matter some thought, and I just happened upon a keyword generator and I started randomly generating nonsense words and for some reason when “Mindbla” came up it stuck in my head. I mean, it isn’t completely nonsensical, in fact it’s quite to the point when it comes to blogging. Blablabla about what’s on my mind, right? A fitting enough name for my blog title, albeit a bit random and weird (as am I lol).
So, I decided to go for it. Time will tell whether or not that was a wise decision. If you remember the name of this site without pen or bookmark, and better yet tell all your friends about it so the site really takes off, then I can go ahead and call it kismet. If I shut down in a few months, well it was only 10 bucks anyway. And there’s always another blog title to be found, although coming up with decent dot-coms that haven’t already been snatched up is quite a chore!
And there ya have it. Hope you enjoy your time on the site, and if you like it, please share it. It’s all about stuff that’s on my mind, and hopefully stuff that’s on your mind, too.
