So I found my latest article received a bit of attention over on Reddit, thanks to everyone who recommended it and took the time to check it out. Much, much appreciated!
I was amused to read a comment over there by a guy who goes by the handle of “Doctor Amazing” and seems to take a lot of pleasure in handing out snarky comments towards other peoples’ work. Here’s what he had to say about my article.
“Sophomoric whining from somebody who has clearly never had to moderate or maintain anything with public access”
Well, let me address that piece by piece. Firstly, while I consider myself somewhat tongue in cheek regarding the internets I wonder if sophomoric is a good choice of insults. I simply observed and wrote about a funny situation I encountered. As for whining, well I didn’t get banned or suffer any consequences as a result of the experience so what exactly am I “whining” about? If anything, my observations were more on a macro level and I consider myself both bemused and amused by the experience, but far from upset over it. So I don’t know where he gets “whining” from based on what I wrote (assuming he even read it).
As to the rest, no I haven’t (clearly) had the pleasure of doing any moderating or maintaining of public forums and I certainly hope I never do. I don’t consider that sort of thing a badge of honor or anything. As a matter of fact, I’ve given though to starting up an online forum of my own from time to time and the main issue that always stops me is the fact that moderating forums is a gigantic pain in the ass. Who needs it? Not me!
But if I ever do, I can say one thing with certainty. I’ll not give a rat whether or not some contributors feel the desire to talk about their websites or any other personal matters, and I most certainly wouldn’t go around trying to protect my turf from competetors, that’s just silly. Not to mention counter-productive. The internet works best when it’s an open and free flowing forum, that’s why we all include links to other sites on our blogs and websites, isn’t it? Legit links, I mean, not affiliate marketing links disguised as recommendations or anything like that.
In any case, this guy is pretty funny and I found several more of his oh-so-witty comments directed towards others that are worth sharing, just to highlight where this guy is really coming from, so I’ll leave you with those.
“Ooo, another “guess what point I’m trying to make” post. My favorite. Now maybe you can guess which arrow I pressed.”
“Excellent evasion of my point. Well done!”
“No way, a video gaming product at a game store? That’s unpossible. Now post a photo of a used controller. That would be sweet.”
“On a scale of nine to ten, how much does your butt hurt?”
Way to keep it classy there, Doctor Amazing!
Til next time, everyone. Have a great day!
